The Dirt Farmers

you are standing in the middle of a farm, it’s mid august and the summer heat is at its peak, the cows are mowing as the fragrance of their excrement’s buzzes through your nasal hairs causing you to pinch the tops of your nostril holes in an attempt to avoid the humidified stench. Surrounding you are an assortment of other familiar farm animals such as pigs, singing cockerels and dogs that playfully bully the timid heard of sheep that reside on the surrounding paddocks. To the left of your eye’s view there sits a small shack that animatedly jerks to the rhythmic pattern of thumping kick drum sounds. The sound continues as the kick drum thump doubles “Duff-Duff” and then triples “Duff-Duff-Duff”. Followed by a muffled but contradictive crisp snare .

The intoxicating rock infused Hip-Hop drum instrumental intrigues you to wonder closer toward the awkwardly built shack. By the time of your arrival the sound has grown. The sound of lush sample based string melodies and reggae base licks make you forget that you are standing in the middle of a farm, until the humid smell of cow dung quickly strikes you back to reality.

As the beating August sun rays pita pata on the beads of sweat that trickle down the crevasses of your forehead your mind fades into a trance and your body becomes invaded by an unfamiliar spirit. Like a fat boy slim dance routine your arms flap rhythmically as your neck snaps back and forth. “What is happening to me?” you ask. “Am I tripping?” Then the door to the wooden shack swings open to a group of unfamiliars who shout ‘No dude! You’ve just been hit by the infectious rhythms of the Dirt Farmers
